Samba
Classes begin on Tuesday, March 6! This 8-week session goes from March 6 - April 24. Classes are from 5:30-7:00 p.m.
In this class, you will learn Samba and other Brazilian Dance Styles including Samba Rio, Samba Reggae and Maracatu. Students will also focus on learning and practicing Samba. There will be fun exercises and choreography geared towards improving dance technique and having fun with the music. Maria guarantees a high energy workout!
Maria Vanderhorst is originally from the Philippines and has lived in Humboldt County since 1996. She has studied Brazilian dance since 1999 in both the United States and Brazil. While in Brazil, she participated in classes at the Casa de Dança Carlinhos de Jesus in Rio de Janeiro and the Escola de Dança da Fundação Cultural do Estado da Bahia. In the United States, she has studied with Rosangela Silvestre, Dandha da Hora, Maisa Duke, Ana Carla Laidley and Rodson Santos de Jesus. Maria guest teaches for the Humboldt State University Theatre and Dance Department and offers community classes to Humboldt County residents. She is Co-Director of both the local samba dance performance troupe Samba na Chuva. Maria also shares in the direction of Samba da Alegria, the troupe that produces the annual North Country Fair Samba Parade.
